Before Taking Ativan
Ativan should not be taken if you have narrow-angle glaucoma, or especially if you are allergic to the drug or any other drugs in the group of benzodiazepines. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to any other drugs and let them know of any conditions you may have. Let your doctor know especially if you have glaucoma, any breathing difficulties such as asthma or bronchitis, kidney or liver disease, history of drug abuse, or a history of depression. Your doctor will carefully monitor your treatment and let you know how to proceed.
As mentioned above, ativan is known to cause birth defects in unborn babies. Tell the doctor if you become pregnant whilst taking ativan. If you are currently breast-feeding you should let your doctor know, as it is not yet clear whether the drug can pass through into the breast milk or not.
Side Effects of Ativan
There are on occasion serious side effects of the drug, which may include depression or suicidal thoughts, hallucinations or fainting. If you experience any of these, or allergic reactions to the drug (such as hives, facial swelling or swelling of the throat) you should contact your doctor immediately.
There are also more common less serious side effects of ativan including general drowsiness, skin rashes, insomnia, and nausea. There are other side effects that may occur when taking the drug, so contact your doctor if you start to experience any unwanted effects.
Other Drugs that Affect Ativan
If you are taking any other drugs you should let your doctor know before you start taking ativan. This includes prescribed drugs, over-the-counter remedies, minerals and vitamins, herbal remedies or anything else. You should especially let your doctor know if you are using any drugs on the following list: barbiturates; any MAO inhibitors; narcotic medications, or any antidepressants.
